Free child care places for 2 year olds

Kirklees Council offer eligible 2 year olds free child care and early education places for 15 hours a week during school term time.


Is my child entitled to a free place?

You can claim a free child care place for your child if you receive one or more of the following:

  • Income Support

  • Income Based Jobseekers Allowance

  • Income related employment and support allowance

  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

  • The guarantee element of State Pension Credit

  • Child Tax Credit and/or Working Tax Credit and your annual household income is less than £16,191 (as assessed by HM Revenue & Customs)

  • If you are in receipt of working tax credit you will benefit financially by claiming your free hours and will still be able to claim up to 70% of your remaining childcare costs from HMRC. If you are eligible, once you have received your confirmation letter and voucher you will need to inform HMRC of the change in your childcare costs.


Children are also eligible if they:


  • Are Looked After by the Council, or have left care through a Special Guardianship or Child Arrangements Order, or Adoption

  • Have a Child Protection or Child in Need Plan

  • Have had an Early Help Assessment

  • Have a current Statement of Special Educational Needs [SEN] or an Education, Health and Care plan

  • Receive Disability Living Allowance

When can eligible children start their free place?


  • If your child’s 2nd birthday falls between 1 January and 31 March, they will be entitled to a free place from the start of the summer term (after Easter)

  • If your child’s 2nd birthday falls between 1 April and 31 August, they will be entitled to a free place from the start of the autumn term (early September)

  • If your child’s 2nd birthday falls between 1 September and 31 December, they will be entitled to a free place from the start of the spring term (early January)

After you have applied:

  • If you are eligible, Kirklees will send you a voucher to give to your chosen childcare provider

  • If Kirklees cannot confirm that you are eligible they will write to you requesting additional information
